Billing (1.2.1) exemption for a free, read-only connector to an existing multi-channel SaaS?

Hi everyone,

We build a multi-channel advertising analytics platform. Shopify is one read-only data connector among several (ad platforms, CRMs, payment processors). The Shopify app itself is free and never charges the merchant, in-app or otherwise.

Merchants subscribe to the broader platform separately and independently of Shopify: everyone who connects a store is already an existing customer adding one more read-only data source. The app is distributed unlisted (no App Store search presence, no acquisition through Shopify).

Under requirement 1.2.1 we are requesting an exemption from the Shopify Billing API, since the connector carries no charge in relation to the Shopify app. We have included the request and reasoning in the app review notes, as advised in earlier threads.

For anyone who has been through this:

  • For a free, read-only connector like this, are the review notes the right and only channel, or is there a separate exemption process we should also use?
  • What tends to tip a connector-of-an-existing-paid-SaaS case toward being granted vs denied?
  • Roughly how much time does an exemption decision typically add to the review?

Thanks a lot for any pointers.

Good question, I looked for some docs but couldn’t find anything. Tag me when you have updates.
