Catalog API: is there any way to identify a brand's own storefront among sellers of the same product?

Working with the Catalog API and hit something I can’t resolve from the docs.

Searching for a specific branded product returns multiple merchant listings under separate Universal Product IDs for what is physically one product. Concrete example: “Hatch alarm clock” returned five distinct UPIDs for the same Hatch Restore 3, one per merchant, prices from $169.99 to $24,000. Restore 2 returned four more. The brand’s own store appeared once and was not ranked first.

Some sellers are clearly resellers — randomized myshopify.com subdomains, prices at 2–3x retail, one listing that looks like a data error.

I need to select a single listing per product programmatically, and I’d prefer the brand’s own. Three questions:

  1. Is there any field, flag, or filter that distinguishes a brand’s official storefront from a third-party seller carrying the same product?
  2. Is seller.name reliable for this? In my results it returns the merchant (Hatch, REBEL, SyncPlay, ZLINERS), so matching against a brand name seems fragile — can resellers use names that would collide with the brand?
  3. If there’s no such signal, what heuristics are recommended? I’ve been considering: real domain over randomized myshopify.com subdomain, require condition: ["new"], prefer listings carrying a rating, flag prices far from median.

Happy to share raw responses if useful.

Hey @lani88, Currently, there is not a flagg or filter that marks a seller as the brand’s own store.

For seller.name being reliable for this, I do think it would be a weak signal at best. The reason for that is large brands are likely paying attention and will take action on unauthorized stores, but that does require action on their end.

For recommended heuristics, what you’ve mentioned is good. Real domains, new conditions, and listings that carry a rating would all be really useful.
