Discounts → Combinations: help text is wrong for non-Plus stores

The Combinations section of the admin dashboard discount editor renders a Product discounts checkbox with the help text Multiple can apply per order. That text is misleading, and on a non-Plus store it’s effectively wrong.

What the API docs say about the input that controls such combination:

Controls which product discounts can apply together on the same cart line. By default, only one product discount applies per line. Available only on a Shopify Plus plan and requires the productDiscounts field to be set to true.

So combinesWith.productDiscounts = true on a non-Plus store only lets two product discounts land on different cart lines of the same order. It never stacks two product discounts on the same line. Stacking on one line requires Plus plus reciprocal tag matching.

Why the current text is a problem

Multiple can apply per order is technically true but reads, to most merchants, as multiple can apply to this product. Nothing in that one-line help text signals the per-line limit or the Plus requirement. The merchant-facing Help Center is much clearer about the split (separate items vs the same item), but that nuance doesn’t survive into the editor.

Result: merchants check the box, expect two product discounts to stack on an item, and only one applies.

Steps to reproduce

  1. On a non-Plus store, create two active product discounts that target the same product.
  2. On both, in Combinations, check Product discounts (the help text reads “Multiple can apply per order”).
  3. Add that product to the cart and go to checkout.
  4. Only one of the two product discounts applies to the line.

Expected: the help text tells the merchant that only one product discount applies per product, so the outcome in step 4 isn’t a surprise.

Actual: the help text says “Multiple can apply per order”, which merchants read as per product.

Suggested fix

Change the product-discount help text to something like:

Multiple can apply per order, only one per product

And, where applicable, point to the Plus-only “Multiple per product” / stacking-tags option so the limitation and its workaround are visible in the same place

Environment

  • Store plan: Basic
  • Discount types used: Both automatic and code discounts
  • Admin API version referenced: 2026-07

Hey @David_Arbias - thanks for flagging this and including the reproduction steps.

I see what you mean here and your distinction is correct: combining product discounts across an order is different from stacking them on the same item. The current help text leaves out the per-item restriction on non-Plus stores, and merchants shouldn’t have to discover that limitation at checkout.

I’m looking into making that limit explicit in the editor, using your suggestion as a starting point. I don’t have a confirmed fix or timeline to share yet, but I’ll update this thread if that changes.
