How to offer existing merchants a 60-day PRO trial without triggering an immediate appSubscriptionCreate charge approval?

Hey
We want to offer some of our existing legacy/free merchants a 60-day extended trial of our new PRO tier.

The friction we are running into is that using the standard Shopify Billing API (appSubscriptionCreate), merchants are forced to approve the charge upfront, even if we pass trialDays: 60 in the mutation. We want to remove this friction completely so they get immediate, seamless access to the PRO features without having to click through a Shopify billing screen today.

What is the best practice for giving existing users extended free access without subscribing them to a paid plan immediately? Should we bypass the Billing API entirely right now, manage the 60-day trial app-side (we use Gadget), and only trigger the subscription approval flow on day 60 if they decide to keep the features?

Please do not tag Shopify staff members that have not already engaged in a topic. This is outlined in the code of conduct.

If you use Gadget, it’s better to contact their support team. They have a Discord server where you can ask questions.

This is a Shopify related question. I also have the same question and I don’t use Gadget or any service.

You can just manage this yourself, you simply don’t call appSubscriptionCreate until you’re ready, and manage the trial yourself.
