Any update on this deadline?
I believe we are still many app developers contemplating if we should rush the migration in before November - and hope not to lose any customers. Any signal you can give us here would be really valuable.

Maybe everyone should just turn off their apps for a couple of days! ![]()
With all the bad things that Shopify sent at us, I have been dreaming of this for weeks. Like all partners gather and take an action all together. Let’s go on strike!
We paused the migration for our two apps after learning that Shopify was considering extending the deadline.
Should we assume the original deadline still stands?
@TerenceShopify any update on deadlines please?
@TerenceShopify It would be great if we could get an update on the deadline. If an extension isn’t possible, could you elaborate on why that’s the case?
As mentioned before, partners are dealing with a lot at the moment, and it would be greatly appreciated if we could get a little more breathing room rather than having to meet deadlines that, from my perspective, don’t warrant such tight timelines.
Surely someone at Shopify must be able to shed some light here? The lack of communication is getting completely ridiculous at this point.

In addition to this thread, there’s also the Please add recovery parity with refresh tokens thread, where I explicitly laid out the need for extra recovery mechanisms. I made sure to provide extensive details, edge cases, and concrete examples of exactly why this is a critical failure point for apps managing hundreds or thousands of merchants.
I received a couple of replies from Shopify saying it was “being looked into.” And what was the result? A half-baked solution that completely misses the core issue. It only addresses stores that haven’t attempted to migrate yet.
There is STILL absolutely zero fallback or recovery mechanism in place for when a migration actively fails for a store.
Are we just supposed to accept that production apps will permanently lose API access to merchants if a token migration drops? We are talking about critical background tasks, daily syncs, and severe operational disruptions for real businesses. We have been asking for weeks for clarity on this oversight and have received absolute radio silence.
We need an actual engineer or product manager to explain exactly how we are supposed to handle failed migrations today, or a firm timeline on when a proper recovery endpoint is being shipped.
Hi all - I appreciate the frustration expressed above. We are continuing to invest in updates to the token acquisition flows and the details of the timeline for enforcement. I unfortunately don’t have a direct answer to share at the moment on changes to either but will have more to share soon.
It’s been 26 days since the last response, and we’re still being told there’s nothing concrete to share.
How difficult is it to simply postpone a deadline? From my perspective, this change doesn’t warrant such a strict timeline in the first place, especially when there are still unresolved issues with the token acquisition flows. Unless I’m missing something, Shopify has the ability to push this deadline back.
Shopify is capable of launching entirely new products like Shopify Canvas, yet somehow communicating clearly and consistently with its app partners seems to be a challenge.
Sorry for being blunt, but why does it feel like nobody is taking ownership of this? Where is the accountability? Where is the reliable communication that partners should be able to expect from a platform they build their businesses on?
I fully understand that there may be a lot happening behind the scenes that we’re not aware of. But that’s exactly why transparency matters. Partners shouldn’t have to repeatedly chase updates or speculate about decisions that directly affect their businesses.
It’s not just about the deadline anymore. It’s about trust. And the continued lack of transparency and clear ownership is genuinely concerning.
Well said, personally if we’re still on the Shopify train it’s because we have client who trust us to support them and we don’t want to leave them behind.
But Shopify makes it difficult to be willing to invest more in the platform.
