New Shopify admin look - what does it mean for BFS and for those who partially migrated?

Announcement from Shopify about the new styling of the admin: Prepare your app for the Shopify admin's new look - Shopify developer changelog

Question 1:

What does it mean for apps that are not ready and their status built for Shopify?

Question 2:

For those who are still partially using polaris-react and polaris web components. What will happen? Will we have a mix of both styles?

Request

Can we also have a timeline? We’re partners so that’s the minimum we deserve to know.

Thank you.

I’m just worried because we don’t use Polaris Web Components and ever since they deprecated polaris-react the polaris code became closed source, and it became harder to make the app keep a similar style.

We rather not migrate to webcomponents to have more flexibility, development speed and reliability.

Can we have someone from Shopify to take a look at this? The changelog does not have these informations

Hey folks, these are good questions. Please continue sharing any additional feedback in this thread.

I’m looking into this and will follow up once I have more information.

Is there any way to actually see the new admin? I have no stores switched to it, and none of the articles have any screenshots or references.

Hey @gruntlord6, there isn’t currently a partner-facing (or merchant-facing) way to manually enable the refreshed admin. It’s rolling out progressively, so it will become available when the rollout reaches your store(s). We don’t have specific timing for individual stores, but it’s on the way. Hope this helps!

@Wes-Dev-Shopify it means we discover last minute and we don’t have a chance to prepare to it?

This seems like a weird decision.

When the previous admin design was released, devs were warned way in advance, and Polaris React had a beta for developers to try. Here, a new admin design rolled up overnight, without any upgrade to the Polaris React components.

At least a new version of Polaris React should be released to help app dev (and reduce merchants frustration) to upgrade progressively, especially since Polaris Web Components are FAR FAR FAR from being feature parity with Polaris Web Components. Most app devs will probably need to wait many, many months until Polaris web components catch up, and merchants will end up with an inconsistent experience for long time. And the argument of “you can mix Polaris React and web compoentns” no longer hold up, nobody want a UX with two different interfaces.

Hey folks - I hear the concern about having enough time to prepare and keeping your app’s styling consistent during the transition.

I’ve raised the questions about BFS status and partially migrated apps with the relevant team. I’m still waiting for confirmed guidance and will share it here once I have it.

“Concern” undersells the situation: we build for Shopify, literally. This “drop major changes last minute and figure it out when it’s live” pattern isn’t sustainable, and it seems to be the new normal at Shopify. If Shopify wants developers building reliably on this platform, last-minute drops need to stop.

Beyond the issue of preperation time, what was even the point of the notice when we were given literally nothing to prepare with? No screenshots, no updated webcomponents, no way to view in the dev stores we have for this exact purpose

That worked well thank you for sharing! Save your screenshots folks, they might disable it soon now we found it :smiling_face_with_horns:

Thanks! The great thing is that more of the admin seems to use web components now, but the funny thing is that we still see Polaris React compoennts in the new admin:

Which means that somehow Shopify has an updated React Polaris for their own consumption. Why not at least release it?

Could it be that they simply updated the css variables? From what I see there is very little fundamental changes in the new ui, at least in the page body.

BTW - how far are we for feature parity between web-component and react component?

On a side note, we have somes components that are tweaked via CSS/JS to add features and styling customizations. Which, as far as I know, wouldn’t be possible with the web-component rooted in their shadow dom

@Wes-Dev-Shopify I used the code shared above to force the new admin, but it appears there is already a bug, I’m on the dashboard (root url) of my app, yet it shows a back button which does nothing when clicked.

Pretty rude of Shopify to just put sidekick on top of my app:

I noticed many problems, they’re clearly not ready. Let’s wait and see what they land. Hopefully they still know how to build good things.

Yea the sidekick thing is annoying since it can’t even do anything in third party apps.

Wow how did you find this

Oh snap we need to add more bottom spacing for the “Work with Sidekick” overlay now
