We’d like to be able to globally ignore files (e.g. json templates) in the .shopifyignore file, but not on shopify theme dev. In that case, we do not want the json files being ignored.

Interesting. So something kind of like shopify theme dev --allow-all or something to that affect?

--allow-all would solve this but it’s all-or-nothing: it also un-ignores things you still want hidden everywhere (.env, secrets, editor/OS files), and it lives in a shell command rather than a reviewable config, so nobody reading the repo would know dev behaves differently.

I’d propose a companion file, shopify.ignore.toml (in line with shopify.theme.toml/shopify.app.toml), scoped by command (not environment — shopify.theme.toml’s [environments.*] is store-scoped, and dev can run against any environment):

.shopifyignore stays untouched (pure gitignore syntax, no new sections to parse). A command with no table keeps today’s behavior exactly. The override is explicit, versioned, and scoped only to the patterns actually needed per command — not a blanket bypass.
