Purchase Orders now block all variants if any variant is a bundle? Why?

I’m hoping someone from the Shopify product/engineering team can explain the rationale behind this change, because from a merchant perspective it feels like a major regression.

After a lengthy investigation with Support, engineering confirmed that as of 2 May 2026, the Purchase Order product picker now evaluates bundle eligibility at the product level rather than the variant level.

For example:

  • Variant A – Bundle :white_check_mark:
  • Variant B – Bundle :white_check_mark:
  • Variant C – Standard variant (not a bundle) :cross_mark:

Because the product contains any bundled variants, the entire product is excluded from the Purchase Order picker, including Variant C, which has no bundle components whatsoever.

Support also confirmed this behaviour changed on 2 May. We were successfully purchasing the non-bundled variant before that date.

The recommended workaround is to split bundled and non-bundled variants into separate products.

I genuinely don’t understand the reasoning behind this.

The bundle relationship exists at the variant level. The PO is for a variant. So why is the eligibility check happening at the product level?

This change has effectively crippled our purchasing workflow. Splitting products isn’t a realistic workaround for established catalogues. it creates duplicate products, breaks existing product structures, complicates merchandising and reporting, and introduces unnecessary maintenance for what appears to be an artificial limitation.

Can someone from Shopify explain:

  • Why was this logic changed?
  • What problem was it intended to solve?
  • Is there a technical reason the PO picker can’t simply evaluate the selected variant’s bundle status instead of the parent product?

I’d really appreciate some visibility into the decision here because, from where we’re sitting, this seems like functionality that has simply become less capable than it was before 2 May.

Hey @ChrisBradley

Thanks for flagging - this is not the intended behaviour and we’re working on a fix for this currently.

@Liam-Shopify

thanks Liam, I was very surprised to here this was expected behaviour from Plus Support.

Can you let me know when this is rolled out?

Hi @ChrisBradley thanks for your patience on this. The fix has now been rolled out. Let us know if you continue to experience issues.

@Paige-Shopify still not working on our end…

Thanks for letting me know @ChrisBradley, looking into it now to see why it’s still not working.

@Paige-Shopify Thanks, let me know if you need any further information from my side to expedite.
