Today my team was discussing the new release allowing merchants to sell subscription products in POS. This is something our clients have been asking us about for years now. But after looking at the documentation (found here: About subscriptions ) under the POS Limitations section, I noticed a particular entry that says: Subscription-only products are not supported on POS. Since primarily we enable memberships for merchants, in most cases the products we create are subscription-only.
My first question is: Is this actually true and not just accidentally left in from the previous version of the documentation? Wishful thinking really, but who knows. My second question is: If it’s currently not supported, is there a timeline that can be shared if/when subscription-only products will be supported in POS? Our merchants bring this up all the time.
Thanks for the response. That’s what I’m hoping for. Although, when I look at the flow, it appears that adding the line item and adding the selling plan are 2 separate actions. First you add the line item w/o a selling plan attached. Then once the line item is already in cart you can optionally add a selling plan to it. Meaning there’s an assumption that the product can be purchased without a selling plan, which isn’t the case for subscription-only products.
We’re going to test this out on our end, but still hoping someone from Shopify could chime in here with a definitive answer.
Hello Sam – Brian here from Shopify’s Retail Partnerships team.
The documentation is correct, subscription only-products are not currently supported on Shopify Point of Sale. We appreciate your feedback and understand the use cases of selling subscription-only products, such as memberships, on POS, and we hope to address this in the near future.
