Strengthening trust in App Store reviews

Hi jzaz,

Could you provide more details about #2, including how it will work and when we can expect it to be implemented?

We are struggling to understand why clearly suspicious reviews are allowed to remain published, such as this one:

The merchant took no action within the app and never contacted our support team. They simply installed the app, left a negative review, and uninstalled it. The merchant is unreachable, and the store’s policy pages also suggest that the website does not meet any policy requirements.

The setup of our app literally takes a few clicks and we are trying to reach out to the merchant to do this for him, but still, no response on any channel.

Your support team says these cases are escalated to a specialized team that investigates fake reviews. However, we have serious concerns about the effectiveness and transparency of this process. Two years ago, we reported another clearly fraudulent review and provided evidence that the merchant was attempting to blackmail us. We never received an update or even confirmation that the case had been investigated.

We were also advised to report malicious activity through a separate form. That report produced no response either, not even a simple confirmation that the case had been reviewed and no violation was found.

Despite being one of the leading apps in our categories, a single fraudulent review can reduce our App Store ranking by one or two positions. This can significantly decrease installations for weeks and undermine years of work by our team.

To be clear, our main concern is not necessarily that the review remains visible. Merchants reading it can clearly recognize that it is not genuine. The real issue is that the same review can disproportionately affect our ranking and installations.

Could you clarify how these reviews are assessed, what safeguards are being developed, and when app developers can expect meaningful improvements? There should be a transparent process through which developers can submit clear evidence, receive confirmation that it was reviewed, and prevent demonstrably fraudulent reviews from causing such disproportionate damage.

Otherwise, I do not understand what would prevent a bad actor who controls multiple stores from achieving this.

I would really appreciate any additional information you can share on when those measures would be implemented. :folded_hands:

We’ve seen a significant number of our reviews removed late last year too - all genuine organic reviews.

Some reviews are left by agencies/developers though, they engage with us directly on behalf of the merchant, but still they are genuine reviews.

Shopify needs to work on their fake review detection, the only people getting punished here are developers trying to do the right thing.

Hey @jzaz,

It is disheartening to see complete silence here. This thread was opened on July 6, and nearly two months later, not a single question or concern raised by the community has received a reply from you or anyone on the Shopify team.

If this initiative is meant to build trust, ignoring valid developer concerns for seven weeks makes the announcement feel performative. Can we please get some direct answers to the questions posted above?

Agreed. This whole thing has been a shambles, and it’s really taken the wind out of my sails when it comes to trying to improve the App Store. We need some proper answers, and more importantly, some meaningful action. Fake reviews are still rife, and honest developers have been punished.

Prehaps take some notes Shopify?

I’m sharing an update to this here: An update on App Store reviews

That is practically allowed in the App Store, you know. As in there will be no consequences

I’ve re-reported these guys. @jzaz surely stopping this sort of behaviour is the absolute bare minimum…

They are literally making PayPal payments in exchange for reviews…
