Just came across this app using ‘Stocky Alternative’ in its title, surely this isn’t allowed?

Hey @Luke - I’m actually curious about this one being one of those apps that is trying to let stores know I have all of the same functionality (FyreTrail) that Stocky does/did (albeit differently).
I don’t like that they did this, but to be completely fair here, what’s wrong with it? Stocky is going away, it’s not owned by another app (anymore) so there’s no good faith non-compete thing going on (i.e. saying, “FyreTrail alternative” or “Prediko alternative” or whatever would be direct competition and downright copyright infringement). But other than that, what was on your mind about this?
Asking whats wrong with this is wild, how can you think it’s okay to use another app’s name in the title?
Well, I thought I was clear on that - I even gave you examples. Given the situation it’s not wild at all. It’s abandon-ware.
The app developer also came up on my LinkedIn, I challenged them and they said:
The app was reviewed by Shopify. So the name stays
Interesting, so I did some digging, and it seems they then did a name change which means it wasn’t approved under that name.
@Paige-Shopify On this basis, I’m guessing this isn’t allowed.
I’m still checking this with the Partner Governance team so they can assess it against our App Store and Partner Program policies.
I’m in the theme/app development space, so I don’t want to make a definitive call on the outcome here. That said, using another product or app name in an App Store title can raise brand or trademark usage concerns, and a previous app review doesn’t necessarily confirm approval of a later listing name change. I’ll follow up once I have clearer guidance.

I have to agree, this practice shouldn’t be allowed.. In the description maybe, App name? Flat out no.
They’re just trying to siphon off from another apps name, I.e. can I create an App called Stockyy??
Shopify’s Partner Program Agreement restricts use of Shopify trademarks/trade names in partner products and app names without permission - this should be a slam dunk, no?
“Partners cannot use ‘Shopify’, or the ‘S’ shopping bag design, or any other Shopify Trademarks in the name or design of the Partner’s business or logo, or any Partner product or service including Apps or Themes without permission.”

it’s insane that Partners are having to police this 
- Suggestion - could app name changing be ran through some string checks / LLM to check for this kind of violation? That way we don’t need to report, and Shopify Governance team don’t need to waste their time on things like this
There’s actually one called “Stockie” lol… it’s kinda rampant at the moment.

Just to add more here, they’ve set the SEO title to include ‘Stocky’ twice. They’ve also used ‘built for Shopify merchants’ in the description.

I have the EXACT same issue with someone who just got the Built For Shopify and copied our app name : EZ Product Image Translate

Great news! Obviously my comments were directed directly at Stocky - I had no idea the issue was so widespread with other apps and do agree the overall practice is bad (sorry @Luke- I did not realize it when I questioned your post) . Glad you guys are handling it.
