Following up on our earlier post about what’s coming for Shopify App Pricing, a few of those improvements have now shipped. There are even some new ones based on your feedback. Here’s what’s live:
Increased plan limits
You can now create more plans per app:
Public plans: up to 8 (previously 4)
Private plans: up to 15 (previously 10)
This gives you more room to tailor pricing across different merchant segments without hitting limits.
No-charge plan testing
You can now test app billing flows without generating real charges:
During app review, reviewers can select any of your existing plans — so you no longer need to create a dedicated test plan just to get through review.
In development stores, you can install your own apps and subscribe to any plan at no cost.
Mark a plan as free to let other partners and developers install your app and test that plan in their own development stores.
Additional App Events support
The App Events API now accepts:
Negative values - to adjust or credit previously reported event usage
Fractional values - such as 1.5
Previously, event values were limited to whole numbers greater than 0. This makes usage reporting more flexible for corrections and finer-grained metering.
As far as I can see, the dev docs haven’t been updated yet with any new info. Can you elaborate at all on these points and how they work?
Is this similar to how the old managed pricing worked where all dev shops automatically process test charges?
Is “mark a plan as free” some sort of function for dev shops specifically - I’m assuming this isn’t just a free plan available to all shops?
Thanks for the update. A few questions and feedback from building a usage-based app:
Charging before usage: Are there any plans to support prepaid models, such as credit packs or charge-at-threshold? With postpaid billing, we cover the per-unit cost upfront and only get paid at invoice settlement, so non-payment risk falls entirely on the developer. For usage with real underlying costs, a prepaid option would make a big difference.
Usage event display order: Usage event names on the plan are sorted alphabetically, and there’s no way to customize which one is displayed first. Could we get explicit ordering control?
Usage details on the plan page: There’s currently no way to explain what a usage event includes. A question mark icon with a tooltip on hover would help, or ideally something more functional like a per-event description field or a “learn more” link.
I work with the App Pricing team. Thanks for the docs feedback - we’re still rolling out updates.

In a development store owned by the same Partner org as the app (i.e. your own setup) you can select any of the app’s plans without being charged. There’s nothing you need to enable on the plan. The result is similar to the old test-charge experience, but the implementation is different: App Pricing creates a subscription at an effective price of $0 rather than using the legacy test=true flow.

This setting is a plan-level opt-in. If you mark a paid plan as free for testing, eligible development stores owned by other Partners can select that plan at no cost. It does not make the plan free for merchants or production stores, which continue to see and pay the regular price.
Are those screenshots from your listing page in the App Store?
To see the $0 pricing, install the app on one of your development stores: in Dev Dashboard, open the app, select Install app, and choose the development store. Then open the app in that store and view its plan selection page, where the $0 pricing options for plans should appear.
Same goes for other partners for plans marked with the free testing option: they need to first install your app to their development store, where eligible plans should then appear.
This is great feedback, thanks for sharing. I don’t have specific roadmap details or timing to share right now but we are considering your comments for future improvements to App Pricing.
