Hey,

Wondering with the Buy X get Y discount, does the customer need to add the Y item into the cart or will it add it the Y to the cart automatically?

Yes, the customer will need to add all of the items, including the Y item to their cart. https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/discounts/discount-types/buy-x-get-y#considerations

thought as much. understood, would be honestly an interesting discount type if it added products to the cart at $0.00. I know alot of merchants are going GWP (Gift with Purchase), and a native solution would honestly remove alot of friction.

For the online-sales-channel it generally needs the ajax-api to update the cart with the free Y item, or an input related to the main products form that will submit FormData in the correct format.
Other channels it gets murky
Be aware shopify Plus stores can use the cartTransform shopify-functions/checkout-extensions in checkout; and when there is NOT a selling plan present.

Thanks, we are plus and that is really interesting. something I will explore.

I guess the issue is also removing it when its not applicable but a cart rule could probs do that.

Just feels like it should be easier
