File uploads in the theme editor are not reflected on GitHub

Short description of issue

When uploading a file in the admin theme editor (for example a .min.js file of a library or an image in the assets folder), the change is not reflected in the branch connected to GitHub. If the file is created directly in the editor (for example a new snippet), the sync works as expected.

Reproduction steps

  1. Connect a branch of the GitHub repository to the store
  2. Click Edit Code for that theme
  3. Create a new snippet in the /snippets folder and save
  4. Fetch your GitHub branch and you will see the new file being committed
  5. Now upload any file (for example an image) to the /assets folder
  6. When fetching the branch, the new file is not being committed

What about the missed file syncs from the past weeks? Will there be an automatic sync between the themes and the connected GH branches or do we need to manually handle this?

This might have been a long-standing bug. I don’t believe anything has been changed in that area recently.
