How is the "fingerprint" determined in the "receiptJSON" object of a transaction?

Sorry if this is the wrong tag for this question. None of them seemed to be the right fit.

I just stumbled across the “fingerprint” field in the “receiptJSON” object of a transaction. Can someone help me understand exactly what this is and how it is determined? I noticed in two test transactions using the same credit card, the fingerprint was the same. Can I count on this always being the same when a customer uses the same payment method/device/card?
