We need a way to start a post here on the .dev forums using a link to a locked dev topic on the old forums that then updates that old locked post on the merchant forum with a message & link that it’s technical development discussion continues here on the .dev forums.
Or in a .dev reply we can indicate an old locked forum post as a lifejacket with similar effect.
- Whether that should require certain trust level , idk.
- Whether there should only be 1 lifeboat-post per old locked post on the merchant, probably should be a single landing point to limit dupes.
- Whether multiple replies across different posts on .dev should be able to add a lifeboat comment to the old locked forum post , probably should only be one instance as the point is to remove a dead end for those seeking help.
- Whether the message on the locked merchant community post should reflect the name of the user profile making the life boat (either the merchant-forum profile or dev-forum) idk but doubt it as lot more complicated🤷♂️.
There is a ton of outdated info about shopify that is permanent internet truth because we can’t update old locked posts on the merchant forums with more relevant detail. Causing either duplicated posts in the wrong categories i.e. more noise, or worse silent bias of unhelpfulness because the person finding the locked post can’t respond to because they don’t understand why the post is locked etc etc etc etc.
At some point the SERPS may flip over to .dev depending on how bad the AI noise flood gets but in-between that is a lot of duplication, that is if anyone even bothers to repeat a singular issue in it’s entirety to move it from the merchant forums to the .dev forums. But that still leaves those that only do a surface look out in the cold.
When I have the spare time to give the benefit of my expertise I need as little friction as possible in order to respond. Permanently locked posts due to a migration are infinite friction.
Otherwise my times being wasted NOT being able to help,so may as well keep that info pay gated.
Doing something like reporting locked posts and asking for an update to be added would be a ton of friction to do manually.
