The US Dollar is at a three-year low. For app developers in the EU, primarily serving EU merchants, charging in USD feels impractical and disconnected from our market.
Multi-currency billing for apps is fundamentally broken right now.
We can specify a different billing currency when creating an application charge via the Billing API, but the App Store pricing settings are locked to USD, causing confusion for EU merchants. Partner payouts are also limited to USD.
The documentation recommends local currency billing as a best practice (About billing for your app):
Yet, displaying pricing in a different currency in the App Store remains impossible:
Can you share plans or a timeline for supporting multi-currency pricing and payouts in the App Store? This is critical for EU developers.

Hey Patrick!
Thanks for flagging this - we’re exploring strategies for expanding multi-currency options on the app store. I’ve connected with the app store team on this to ensure they’re aware of the current experience for EU merchants and devs - there’s no timeline to share right now though.

Hey everyone,
I understand that changing the billing currency is a big deal — but please allow us to display local currencies (like EUR) in App Store listings. This would better align listings with how pricing is set, reduce confusion, and help maintain merchant trust.

Hey Liam, it’s been about 6 months. I wanted to check in and see if there’s any update you can share? The dollar is still low, so I think this would be really helpful for many app developers. Thanks!!
Hi @Patrick_Jakubik
Unfortunately there’s nothing to share on this right now.
We would also like to charge merchants in their local currencies, as this makes it easier for merchants to predict the charge amount and can offset some currency volatility of the USD.
@Patrick_Jakubik Did you already implement these charges in different currencies? If you did, can you share if Shopify then still sent the payout in USD?
I haven’t moved forward with this. As far as I understand, payouts would be still only in USD, although perhaps @Liam-Shopify can confirm how it works exactly.
@Patrick_Jakubik thanks for sharing that. I also gave this a lot of thought and I think that simply charging merchants in a different currency without listing the price in their currency on the app store listing can create confusion on their side, as they might expect the value to change according to currency exchange rates. Merchants might even consider this as false advertising. But if you set a fixed price in their local currency, this of course won’t happen as the price on their invoice is the same as the advertised price.
So I think that before implementing this into apps, it is crucial that we get an option to list plan prices on the app store in multiple currencies, at least in the few major ones (USD, CAD, EUR, AUD, GBP, INR, JPY). This can then prevent any confusion from merchants regarding the pricing. As it definitely isn’t ideal to market the app’s price in USD and then charge the customer in EUR.
@Liam-Shopify apologies for tagging you in here, but I can see that this feature to charge merchants in local currency was very well intended, but to make it fully usable, we would also need an option to display prices in at least a few other currencies on the Shopify App Store. It would be great if this feature can be added to the app store listing.
