Shopify App Management GraphQL API returns HTTP 500 when generating Web Pixel extension — app info also fails

I have reproduced the issue on the latest CLI version.

In which of these areas are you experiencing a problem?

Extension

Expected behavior

shopify app generate extension should successfully scaffold a Shopify-generated Web Pixel extension for the linked Puppami Checkout Diagnostics app, including the required extension identity/configuration metadata.

The read-only shopify app info command should also return information about the linked app without error.

Actual behavior

Shopify’s App Management GraphQL API returns HTTP 500 Internal Server Error.

Web Pixel generation has failed three times with these Shopify request IDs:

01a08197-6ea0-74d0-8128-e3c638fa7fc6-1788880580
01a08197-d9de-7302-96e2-cd28d58cf128-1788880607
ea764371-2de2-4bb1-ae3d-2d0a5e5cd795-1788880841

An independent read-only shopify app info request also returned the same HTTP 500 class of failure:

01a0819a-3e15-7516-b95b-4823a106c823-1788880764

No Web Pixel extension object or local extensions directory was created. No partial extension exists.

Reproduction steps

  1. Create or use an existing Shopify development app and link a local Shopify CLI project to it.
  2. Verify authentication and project linkage succeed.
  3. Run:
shopify app generate extension --template web_pixel --name “Puppami Checkout Diagnostics” --flavor typescript
  4. Observe that the Shopify App Management GraphQL API returns HTTP 500 and no extension directory or extension object is created.
  5. Run:
    shopify app info
  6. Observe that this independent read-only command also returns the same HTTP 500 class of App Management API error.

Verbose output

Verbose output not collected yet because further retries have been intentionally stopped after repeated HTTP 500 responses from Shopify’s App Management API.

What language and version are you using in your application?

TypeScript — Web Pixel scaffold failed before extension creation; no generated extension TypeScript version/package exists yet.

HI @Benjamin_Seow - thanks for the detailed report and the request IDs, that made this easy to trace. I pulled the logs for all four IDs and each request reached Shopify and was rejected server side, so nothing about your CLI version, the Windows setup, or the web pixel template caused this.

What happened is the calls failed during session authentication before the App Management API even evaluated the request, and the failures line up with a short-lived infrastructure issue on our side on September 8. That also explains why the read-only app info call failed the same way as the generation attempts.

Nothing was partially created on the app, so there is nothing to clean up. Try shopify app generate extension --template web_pixel again and it should go through. If it still returns a 500, post the new request IDs and I can take another look. The web pixels guide covers the rest of the setup once the extension generates.
