Upcoming change to order edit calculations

Hi everyone,

We’re updating order editing to keep merchants’ taxes and totals accurate after an edit.

Supported order edits made in Shopify admin or through the API will use all the order’s line items and discounts to calculate the result. This means an edit can adjust taxes and totals on line items that weren’t directly edited.

For example, adding a $0 item may change tax on existing items. If your app relies on the order total staying unchanged, test that workflow before upgrading.

For API integrations, this change starts with GraphQL Admin API version 2027-04.

Review all line items and totals on the calculated order before committing an edit. After committing, query the saved order and use its latest financials in downstream workflows.

FAQ

Does this apply to all API versions?

No. This is a versioned behaviour change beginning with 2027-04. Existing supported versions retain their previous behaviour for these requests under the normal support cycle.

Can items my app didn’t edit change?

Yes. An edit can change financials on other items. Review all line items and totals on the calculated order before committing.

Does every edit change the order total?

No. The result depends on the order and the edit. Your app should handle changes to financials beyond the item it modifies.

Our app needs an edit to leave the total unchanged. What should we do?

Test that workflow before upgrading. Share your app name and workflow in this discussion so we can help assess the result.

Thank you,
