URGENT: duplicating theme in canvas disables theme app extensions

Reproduction:

  1. Go to online store
  2. Click in “Duplicate in canvas”
  3. Theme app extensions don’t work anymore:

Expected Result

Theme app extensions should still work

Additional details

Telling sidekick to manually add the respective json for the theme app extension will fix it, but there’s no UI available for merchants.

Duplicating a theme that already has the block also works.

Hi @David_Arbias, you’re seeing expected behavior.

Canvas is a theme editor with a different UX, centered on the visual canvas and Sidekick. Canvas includes Theme settings, but the separate Sections and App Embeds views available when editing non-Canvas themes aren’t included. The Help Center has information on creating and customizing themes in Canvas if you’d like to learn more about the Canvas UX.

Theme app extensions aren’t officially supported in Canvas yet, but we’re working on adding support. Until then, they don’t render in the Canvas editor. If a non-Canvas theme already has theme app extensions enabled, duplicating it into Canvas preserves those extensions in the theme code. That’s why they continue to render in the theme preview and on the live storefront.

See the Canvas announcement for context.
