1-1 relation between inventory item and variant

I have seen this update recently

Docs are still mentioning 1-1 relations as in here:

Contains merchandising information, such as price, description, and images.
Think of this as the product information that you might want a customer to see. All product variants have a 1:1 relationship with their associated inventory item.

Can someone from shopify team explain if its possible variants of different products may have the same inventory_item?

It could be good if someone updates the docs. It’s not a 1-1 relation anymore.
