Apps Asking for Reviews to extend Free Trial

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed a growing trend where some Shopify apps offer users 30 extra days of free trial in exchange for posting a review.

This seems questionable to me, especially considering Shopify’s official review policy, which states:

Reviews may be removed if they are:

  • Fake or misleading

  • Posted in exchange for financial or other gains

  • Used improperly for commercial gain

Offering a free trial extension in exchange for a review seems to clearly fall under “other gains” — even if it’s not direct cash.

So I want to ask the community:

  1. Do you think these reviews should be flagged or reported?

  2. Have you seen this tactic used? Did you feel it influenced your decision as a merchant?

  3. Why are honest negative reviews being archived, but these incentivized reviews remain?

  4. Has anyone reported this to Shopify, and what was the outcome?

This affects trust in the app ecosystem, especially for merchants trying to choose the right tools. Curious what others think — merchants, partners, or app developers.

Thanks!

Hi @Prabin-Qode

It does sound like this model of incentivising reviews is in violation of the partner agreement. Could you use the “Report a Partner” form here: Report a partner violation - Shopify

Hi @Liam-Shopify

Appreciate the guidance. I’ll report the issue using the provided form. Thank you!
