There’s a app that’s in the #1 rank for a popular search term that is listed as “Free”. However, there are multiple reviews stating that the app owner is contacting them and want to charge them for “premium” features. I have a feeling they are doing this “outside” Shopify completely which I’m assuming is a big no-no?
Hey @dylanz - thanks for flagging this.
I can’t guarantee anything from my side based on the screenshots alone, since we’d need to confirm the actual billing path the app is using. A “Free” listing can still have paid or usage-based upgrade paths, but app-related charges for merchants who install through Shopify should generally be handled through Shopify App Pricing or the Billing API unless we’ve granted an exception (which has specific criteria that the app needs to meet in order to have one granted).
If you think this app may be misleading merchants or bypassing Shopify billing, the best next step would be to submit it through our Report a Partner violation form here:
Including the app URL, screenshots, and any details about where merchants are being asked to pay will help the right team review it. Let me know if I can clarify anything on our end here, hope this helps!
Thank you @Alan_G! I’m 99% sure they’re gaming the system and I definitely reported them. Thanks a ton for the link!
No problem @dylanz - I’ll mark this thread as solved for now, but let me know if I can help with anything else ![]()
