Checkout - Chat UI Component "No placement available"

Hello,

I have created an app which permits my customers to deploy a Chat widget on their checkout & thank you page (doc).

One of my customers (Shopify Plus plan) has an issue, when he selects the widget and tries to add it to his pages, the “+” button is disabled and the tooltip indicates “No placement available”. It works well for my other customers.

See screenshot below:

Could it be because of other extensions also defining a Chat UI component and then there is a conflict ? Or the cause is somewhere else?

Thank you for your insights.

Hey @guifo - just confirming this is likely because the chat target is already taken on that checkout profile.

For chat extensions, Shopify only allows a single active extension within the chat targets at any given time. So if the merchant already has another chat extension active for Checkout/Thank you, the editor can show “No placement available” for another one:

I’d have them check their checkout editor for any existing active chat widget/customization, remove or deactivate it, then try adding yours again. Also worth confirming they’re editing the Plus store/profile and that your app is a public app with Chat access approved.

Let me know if I can clarify anything on our end here, hope this helps!

Thanks for your answer.

Our customer doesn’t know which app could cause the issue. Do you know how we could help our customer to identify the App defining which already defined the Chat component?

Hey @guifo - there isn’t currently a public API your app can use to identify which app owns the chat target. The merchant should be able to find it from the affected checkout profile though:

  1. Go to Settings > Checkout and customize the affected configuration.
  2. Check both the Checkout and Thank you pages for an existing chat widget or chat/app entry in the editor sidebar. Selecting it should reveal the app name and removal controls.
  3. Double-check whether your own app is already placed on either page.

I wouldn’t recommend uninstalling apps at random, just wanted to mention that as it could potentially cause issues.

That said, if they can’t identify the active extension through the editor, the best next step would be for the merchant to reach out through https://help.shopify.com. Our support teams should be able to help identify which app or configuration is occupying the placement.
