Checkout UI not reflecting active subscription discounts in "Recurring subtotal"

Short description of issue

Checkout UI not reflecting active subscription discounts in “Recurring subtotal”

Reproduction steps

Step 1: Create a discount code in Shopify Admin specifically for “Subscription” purchase options.

Step 2: Ensure the discount is configured with “Discount applies to all recurring payments.”

Step 3: Add a subscription product to the cart and apply the discount code at checkout.

Observed Behavior: The checkout UI accurately applies the discount to the first order, but the “Recurring subtotal” field displays the full, undiscounted price for future billing cycles, causing customer confusion.

Additional info

We build a subscription app. Our merchants are seeing decreased conversion rates because customers believe the discount is only for the first order, based on what they see in the “Recurring subtotal” field. Even though the billing engine correctly applies the discount to all future charges, the checkout UI creates a misleading “first-order-only” impression.

The Question: Is there any supported API or method for developers to influence or override the “Recurring subtotal” calculation/display in the checkout UI? Since even Plus merchants cannot change this native calculation, are there any workarounds (other than adding explanatory text via UI extensions) that allow us to show the correct, discounted recurring price to the customer?

This is a known problem, and AFAIK Shopify has not said they are going to do anything to fix it.
