Changes in the theme editor disconnect you from development/preview store and redirects to live store password page.

Start development enviroment with shopify theme dev
Open the editor
Open the preview
Make a change in the editor
Look at the preview

Upgraded to latest CLI. Afterwards also tried multiple previous versions which have the same result.
