Short description of issue
Context customisation in Theme Customiser for Theme Settings doesn’t work
Reproduction steps
- Open Theme Customiser
- Choose a different context from the top center menu dropdown (e.g. another Market or B2B)
- Adjust settings in ‘Theme Settings’
- Realise that this doesn’t work and ‘Theme Settings’ apply globally
Additional info
The docs don’t mention this limitation (https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/customizing-themes/store-contextualization).
Reading between the lines, I suspect the feature only works for sections and blocks, which Theme Settings (and App Embeds) are not. Although I do wish there was support for nested blocks in Theme Settings, but that’s another feature request
- The docs should have a ‘Limitations’ section that clearly describes what is not possible to customise by market or B2B
- Theme Customiser should have visual indications when the settings being edited are not going to be context specific, when a context other than default is selected, because it’s too easy for merchants to apply changes thinking that they will be market specific, when they will not be.
- Ideally Shopify should add context specific support for Theme Settings and App Embeds. Many key settings are often in this area, such as Cart settings.

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for sharing your feedback! I’ll document your requests internally
At the moment market and B2B contextualization only applies to sections and blocks. This is referenced in the first line of the Help Center doc that you linked:
If you have more than one market or Shopify B2B feature activated, then you can adapt your online store experience for different customers by editing sections and blocks specific to a market.
In regard to visual indicators, this Help Center doc covers it in depth:

Let me know if you have any questions or anymore feedback on this!
Hi @Paige-Shopify
Thanks for your reply.
At the moment market and B2B contextualization only applies to sections and blocks. This is referenced in the first line of the Help Center doc that you linked:
Yes, I’ve seen the wording in the Help Center doc, but to clarify, I’m saying that it’s not clear enough. It doesn’t clearly say what can and can not be edited by market/B2B context.
I missed that myself as a Shopify Partner with many years platform experience, and I’ve had several merchants that I support also ask me why editing theme settings and app embeds by market/B2B don’t work.
That’s why it would be a great idea to add a “Limitations” section on that page which clearly spells out what is and is not compatible with the feature. This is how it is done on many other Shopify Help Center doc pages, so would be consistent with that and make it far clearer what the limits are.
In regard to visual indicators, this Help Center doc covers it in depth:
To clarify, I am aware that there are already visual indicators for sections and blocks that have contextual changes applied.
I was suggesting that “Theme Customiser should have visual indications when the settings being edited are not going to be context specific, when a context other than default is selected”.
In other words, Theme Customiser should grey out / disable any areas in the editor like Theme Settings and App Embeds when a context other than “default” is selected, so that it’s clear to the merchants that those settings can not be customised by market or B2B context.
Let me know if I can clarify anything else!
Thanks
Oh I understand now! Thank you for clarifying
I’ll see about getting that Help Center article updated, and I’ll add your feedback about having better visual indicators for what cannot be contextualized. It’s actually a great point since only those who know which settings can’t be contextualized know to ignore the UI indicating otherwise.
