How to Safely Upgrade Theme to a Newer Version

Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to Shopify theme development and could use some guidance.
I recently joined my company and inherited a store where the previous person built some custom sections and made modifications to the theme. Unfortunately, there was no handover, so I don’t have any documentation on exactly what was changed.

Now I’d like to upgrade our theme to the latest available version to take advantage of the new features and improvements but I want to make sure I do it safely without losing those customizations.

My main question is:

What’s the best process for upgrading a theme when there are unknown custom changes?

Any step-by-step guidance, best practices, or gotchas to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Vanessa,

You can use this app to do so:

It will update all the sections that exist on the old and new theme. Your custom sections that have been edited will show as conflicts.
I believe there is an AI that will try and fix these for you but you may need to do some manual work too!
