HTS code support in Shopify

Hi,

What’s the status on Shopify support for US customs HTS codes?

This issue is creating a lot of problems for our clients.

Hi @David_DB :waving_hand: - at the moment, we don’t support HTS codes specifically, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from in terms of it being a blocker. Just out of curiosity, would you be able to share any use cases or specific issues your clients/merchants are seeing when it comes to HTS codes (e.g. taxes/duties not calculating properly, etc) just so I can look into some workarounds and advocate on my end here?

We do have a blog post here on our side that mentions using HS codes (the first six digits are the same across HS/HTS codes), and I just wanted to share this in case it’s helpful, but I do realize it’s not the most ideal:

Hope to hear from you soon, happy to dig into this on our end

Hi Alan,

This is for all our clients that sends to the US.

The normal HS code is usually 6 digits. But when sending to the US, they need to use the HTSUS customs code.

We noticed that in Shopify you can now specify customs code for many countries, but the US is not available in the selection dropdown.

Many others like UK, Germany etc can be selected there, but no US.

Also, EU should be there since they all have the same format.

So there are some inconstancies there.

Our app is capable of matching the recipient country to the correct hs code, but does not help since the US is not in the list.

Thanks for clarifying @David_DB , appreciate your details here. I’ll investigate things on my side and see if I can speak with some folks internally to see if this is on our roadmap. I’ll loop back with you as soon as I have more info to share on my end.

Any news regarding this?

Hey @David_DB - thanks for your patience on this. I was able to look into this with some folks internally and can confirm that the HS Code by country/region listing does vary on a shop by shop basis and should reflect regions that the shop sells/ships to. If you’re open to sharing the myshopify.com URL for the shop in question if the US should show up as part of that list, I’m more than happy to dig into this further though.

Hope this helps, please feel free to ping me here if I can help out further.

Thanks Alan,

Yes, it turned out you were right. After adding the US market, it did turn up in the list.

It was just not apparent that this was the cause of this missing entry……

Hey @David_DB , no worries at all, I definitely understand the confusion there though, I’ll log our thread here to see if we can look at adding some updates to the developer documentation/Help Centre docs on our end to make this more clear for folk.

Glad to hear this is resolved!
