I have an app that I am trying to install on a development store. When I attempted the first time, it created an error saying I had to select a distribution method. I selected public and retried.
It is now saying App is under review. It needs to be reviewed by Shopify before it can be installed. Contact the app developer for more information about this app.
Why can’t I install a newly created app into my development store? Prior to the dev dashboard, i would use the partner dashboard, select my app, select install on store, pick my store and it would install it.
How do I overcome this issue and get my app installed?

I think I see the problem, but I do not know how to fix it. The development store I am trying to install on is not in my dev dashboard list of development stores. It is in my partner account list of development stores and is in the list of stores I can install on when trying to install the app from the dev dashboard.
I created a new development store and it shows up in the list of stores in my dev dashboard and I can also install the app on that site.
How do I get my “legacy” development store into my dev dashboard? I have some several of my other “legacy” stores there, but not all of them.
Hey @SancusCommerce, when you log in to the development store in your partner dashboard, are you listed as a staff on the store with app permissions? If not, make sure you are added and that should get the store in to your dev dashboard. The stores available in your dev dashboard are added based on your staff permissions in the store itself, not on the partner organization.
If that doesn’t work, we may need a little more context on the store. ie, Is the store you’re trying to use a client transfer store (transferrable) or a development store (non-transferrable)?
I’m also curious to know the reason you’re needing to use the legacy store as opposed to the new development store? The reason I ask is if you are building the app specifically for that legacy store, a custom app may have been more appropriate.
Public distribution means you’re building for the Shopify App Store, which requires review before ANY installation that is not a dev store. Custom distribution is for building apps for specific merchants and lets you install immediately without review.
Thanks for the help. I have 2 stores I’m trying to install my app.
- Is my own development store that I have been using for years with apps that I have previously created. This is the first time I have added a new app since the migration to the dev dashboard and it is not allowing me to install on it. that store is also not displayed on the list of stores in the dev dashboard, but it is in my list of store in the partner dashboard.
- a site that we developed and transferred to the owner. this store has me configured as a collaborator, not a staff member.
i am using the old development store because it has all of the client’s test data, apps, theme, etc installed on it. I’d prefer to not spend days copying and pasting all of that data over.
My expectation and frustration is that if Shopify had to migrate my stores and collaboration access to a new system, they would test and ensure that everything worked BEFORE performing the migration. This is a huge headache as my client is expecting changes to their site that I don’t have the access or ability to make for them at this time.
Please help restore my access to the 2 stores so I can assist my client.
