Today Shopify is introducing Canvas, a visual workspace where merchants design their Shopify store with Sidekick. It’s the foundation for a new way for merchants to build storefronts and shape them around their ideas. It’s launching alongside the online store editor and will roll out to merchants over the coming days.
What you should know at launch:

There is not yet full backwards compatibility with 3P themes. That’s not an intentional omission. It reflects how early we are in the development of this product and we are working towards compatibility before Canvas begins to become the default editor.

Today, the Theme Store remains an important destination for many merchants choosing the path of a polished and ready theme. At the same time, we’re deeply considering the role of the theme store in this new world. We’re actively working on an exciting future state with theme developers playing a significant role.
Canvas will fundamentally change what merchants can build themselves. We expect themes to be a starting point for merchants to realize their vision.
