Ohh, interesting. I’ll believe it when I see it, as the radio silence from Shopify on here isn’t exactly promising!
Do you mind commenting on that tweet with a link to this thread? It would be good to get the link out there. I don’t use X/Twitter, otherwise I’d do it myself.
Have you taken a look at the recent review feeds for the partner you called out on Twitter/X? Every single one of their apps has had its review velocity completely flatten out.
Shopify team, if this isn’t a big enough red flag that a Partner has been gaming the system, what is? Their apps have hundreds of reviews that were very obviously obtained through dubious means. They get called out, the practice suddenly stops, but the end result is that their apps remain at the top of their categories, continuing to benefit from those ill-gotten reviews.
Surely there needs to be some form of investigation and action here. At the very least, their apps need to be stripped back to zero reviews. This isn’t a case where they could have been targeted by another developer or something similar. They were literally breaking the Partner Program rules for months by offering free access in exchange for a review.
Otherwise, there is very little incentive for Partners to follow the rules when gaming the system can permanently secure them a top position, even after they stop.
Completely agree with everything you’ve raised here. The fake review problem has been one of the most frustrating aspects of building on Shopify for a long time now.
The point about removing links to reviewing stores really stings — that felt like a step backward at exactly the wrong time. Even basic transparency around review verification would go a long way toward rebuilding trust among developers who are playing by the rules.
The dedicated reporting email idea in your P.S. is a great suggestion. Low effort to implement, high signal value. Hope someone from the Shopify team is reading this thread.
Whilst this doesn’t address the developers ignoring the solicitation rules, how about limiting reviews to just the store owners account? this stops all of those developers with access to large number of stores from selling reviews or leaving fake reviews for ransom.
Let’s hope so! It would be good to actually hear something this time, rather than getting the radio silence we had last time.
The whole “we want the best apps to win” spiel does not really work when, in practice, it is often the apps buying reviews and breaking the rules that are being rewarded.
