Is Shopify still iterating on stable releases?

Example: New owner_type field for metafield declarations in Checkout and Customer Account UI extensions, required in 2027-01 - Shopify developer changelog

This post says this change started in API version 2026-10, which was made stable over a week ago (October 1st), yet the changelog post is dated October 8th.

Questions for Shopify:

  1. When exactly was this change made?
  2. Was this a change that Shopify just forgot to mention until October 8th? Or is Shopify still iterating on an API version that is supposed to be stable and unchanged?
  3. Why isn’t this change documented in the API release notes for 2026-10 or 2027-01?
  4. Is Shopify changing its approach to API versioning, and if so, why haven’t we been notified, and why haven’t the docs been updated?

From Shopify’s own docs (linked here):

Shopify supports three version types:

  • Stable: Recommended for production. Guaranteed not to change for its supported lifetime.
  • Release candidate: Published on the same date as the stable release. For example, when 2026-04 releases on April 1, 2026, the 2026-07 release candidate also becomes available. May include backwards-incompatible changes, so not recommended for production.
  • Unstable: Updated continuously with in-progress changes. Features can be added or removed at any time with no guarantee of release. Use it for early testing only.
