Hey folks - we’ve hidden the post sharing the console code snippet as it enables the new admin experience in an unsanctioned way.
Thanks for your patience. We plan to roll out the new styling to development stores shortly, along with updated components for developers to use. We’ll also provide guidance for Built for Shopify apps.
Regarding Sidekick crowding out app content, the Sidekick input doesn’t block all apps, but some apps with custom layouts need to reserve space for it. The Environment API documentation includes guidance on safe-area insets for custom fixed-bottom elements on mobile, such as sticky footers and floating action buttons.
We welcome specific feedback about the new admin and how your apps look and behave within it. Once it’s been rolled out, if you’re noticing problems, please share the affected screen or component, what you expected, and what happened instead. Screenshots and steps to reproduce would be especially helpful.
So why is it shown at all when sidekick cannot interact with third party apps?
Would you care to give us any kind of indication of what a “sanctioned” way to do what was asked?
Hi @Wes-Dev-Shopify , not sure if it has to do with the new design roll out, or some other prep work, but since around the day of the announcement of the new design, I’ve noticed a small increase in timeouts when accessing the GraphQL API (products, variants etc) in the backend.
Nothing major, and pretty random: A small cluster or timeouts here and there during the day, and then all goes back to normal after a couple of minutes. Just an FYI, but probably the team is aware.
The snippet still works fine, I just don’t get why they think everyone who didn’t get to read it can get by with no information when the changelog heavily implies we should be preparing somehow
Sidekick is what is killing the shopify app’s ecosystem. Showing it above the apps is another way to show their love to us
I think it’s pretty clear by now that Shopify thinks AI can replace the app store ecosystem from their behavior:
- Made polaris closed source and enabled only by a script tag with no source control
- Is now requiring identity verification
- Reduced 1 million free fee tier from yearly to lifetime
- Slapping sidekick everywhere
- Giving up on monitoring fake reviews
- Giving up on removing low quality apps
In the next 6-18 months we will either:
- A: see they made the right choice and AGI was achieved, Sam Altman and Darius are now quadrillionaires
- B: AI bubble finally pops, and they decide to improve things again
At Shopify’s scale: apps become obsolete. They will stop operating. Needs for support will lower, the lovely Shopify staff doing their best to help us here and handling our frustration will likely become obsolete too and they’re the next ones to get fired. Sorry @Wes-Dev-Shopify , not meaning to depress you mate, we’re grateful you’re sticking with us for now 
Doomsday stories aside, I was reflecting on the implication of sidekick sitting on top of our apps and I realized that it’s actually worse than I initially expected. I see it like a proper middle finger from Shopify. It’s basically an incentive to use Sidekick instead of the app, and any app that hasn’t integrated with it is genuinely cooked. Once again without letting us know ahead of time. We wouldn’t not even have a clue if we did not find this hack to figure out by ourselves.
In other words it’s one more step forward to kill apps quickly.
If anyone still had hopes that Shopify is on our side…
FYI Polaris web components is versioned now.
So now it has started appearing in my production stores and it is still missing from the dev stores.
I don’t have high hope but is there any plan to make the “Sidekick” bottom bar less prominent? It is taking significant spaces in Admin.
The left black and right white contrast is hurting my eyes. The new white background with white section ( and ) makes it very hard to distinguish the area, relying with just subtle shadow for users to differentiate is awful.

Regarding the Built for Shopify questions, the Polaris 2.0 release candidate announcement confirms that BFS apps have until May 1, 2027 to update their embedded App Home interface to match the Shopify admin’s new visual style. The post also covers testing the release candidate and migrating from Polaris React.

Could we have an option to disable the Sidekick popup entirely?
There are two main issues with it from an app developer’s perspective:

Less technical merchants are likely to assume the popup is part of the app they’re using (quite fairly, as its directly within the app…). That creates a real risk of confusion, support requests, or complaints when Sidekick doesn’t behave the way they expect the app itself to behave.

Shopify regularly asks app developers to make overlays, prompts and promotional UI dismissible. This is something I’ve had raised multiple times during BFS reviews for autoBlogger. So it feels a bit inconsistent for Sidekick to place a persistent, non-dismissible popup directly over an app’s interface.
@Ollie_autoBlogger I’d advise you open a dedicated thread for these very relevant questions so that they can get full attention as requested by Wes
