Hey team, we’ve found ourselves with a need to potentially charge our app users with one time service charges for onboarding (particularly those in our lowest plan). As these charges would be for services and not app usage, do we need to charge through Shopify’s billing API or can these charges be separate and outside of Shopify (as if we were an agency charging for a service)?
I would assume yes. All charges related to your Shopify app need to be kept within the Billing API.
If you’re talking about onboarding charges that are larger than a typical credit card limit, then you can file for an exception for charges outside of Shopify but you’ll still need to report it back to them (due to the revenue share over $1 million partner account lifetime).
