Hello there,
I’m currently building chpter.co, a platform that helps businesses leverage WhatsApp and Instagram as sales channels. We are keen in developing a Shopify Payments App. How does someone make an application, I understand that payment app development is currently by invitation only.
thanks.

I looked into this some time ago. To create public payment apps you can only gain access by invitation, and forum responses still say access hasn’t been opened to new members.
This thread shed a bit more light on the process:
Invite to Payments Partner - How? - Partner Discussions - Shopify Developer Community Forums
Because I had clients, I had to develop a payment extension for Shopify Plus merchants as a temporary workaround; it solved the immediate need but isn’t ideal.
It would be helpful if someone from Shopify staff addressed this, since there’s been demand from developers interested in building new payment apps since 2023.
I can confirm this is still invitation only.
The best option is to check in on this page occasionally for any changes.
Hi,you have mentioned you had to create payment extensions but is it possible to create extensions without being approved partner which is a closed program (invite only).I am confused. Thanks.
Hey @Abidur_Jim, you need to be invited to apply and have that application approved before you can create payment extensions.
Other extension types like checkout extensions can be built without pre-approval. App extensions
Can you provide some examples of checkout extensions
The link above goes to the high level extension page. It’s great for context. Scroll through that and you’ll find the extension types and examples.
Hi everyone,
We are interested in building a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) payment extension for Shopify
merchants in Morocco and the MENA region.
We have the infrastructure and licensing in place and are ready to start development once
the Payment Partner program reopens.
Since applications are currently invitation-only, I have a few questions if anyone from the Shopify team can help:
Questions:
-
Where can we formally express interest in becoming a Payment Partner so we’re
notified when applications reopen?
-
Is there a waitlist or registration form for the Payment Partner program?
-
Should we contact Partner Support directly to register our interest, or is there
a better channel?
-
Are there any recommended steps we should take while waiting (beyond monitoring
the Developer Changelog)?
Our Situation:
- Target market: Morocco (underserved for BNPL solutions)
- Business ready: Licensed payment provider, technical team in place
- Integration approach: Offsite payment extension (redirect flow)
- Goal: Enable Moroccan merchants to offer installment payments to customers
Any guidance on how to stay on Shopify’s radar for when the program reopens would be
greatly appreciated!
