Shop App defaults to SEO crawlable

FYI the new SEO feature for Shop App defaults to allow crawling of your store. Work with your SEO teams to determine if this undermines your on-site SEO strategy by creating highly duplicate content on a domain that might have higher authority than your own. For now I have toggled this off until I could get the guidance from our SEO agency.

We do not see this setting yet in our store but that could be due to a few reasons, most likely the update just hasn’t hit us yet.

But….

Did I miss this update being announced earlier? If it hadn’t been announced to merchant ahead of time then this is an insane thing to add AND default to ON without warning.

Announced today: Control search engine indexing for your shop.app storefront - Shopify Changelog

Yeah I saw it earlier I just don’t have it rolled out to all my stores yet. But them not mentioning it before today is nuts. “Hey we are gonna steal all your organic traffic by default oh and it starts right now”

This happening at the same time as the other Shop channel update today just makes it a double whammy for merchants. Instead of adding updates to help merchants directly on their store or with Shop app customizations they add updates that help cannibalize our product feeds and traffic sources.

It’s Facebook in the early ‘10s all over again.

Facebook grows on the backs of publishers creating content.

Users move to Facebook because it’s more convenient.

Brands loose their unique value because they’ve become commodified

Publishers die off.

Everyone stops using Facebook.

Everything that’s old is new.
