Although the new UI looks clean there have been some UX downgrades.
Reordering lists of metaobject entries
Viewing a metaobject entry directly from a list of metobject entries
Reordering pinned apps
An example - we have a metaobject set up. One of the fields on this metaobject is a list of Metaobjects (see below), which we use to display UI sections in a mobile app:
more difficult to reorder them because the drag and drop items are not vertically aligned.
more annoying to reorder them because the drag and drop functionality includes a clone of the list item that follows your cursor and blocks visibility of where you want to place the item.
slower to scan the order items will be in because it’s no longer a single vertical column of items.
Clicking on a list item has also been downgraded. Previously, it was easier to edit the metaobject list item you clicked on. Now when you click it loads a search bar and a possible list of items you can replace it with, before showing you a “view item” button near the bottom.
Another drag & drop issue is reordering pinned apps. If you attempt to reorder an app that you are currently viewing, which has a menu nested under the app name, the page will suddenly scroll vertically. Also, similarly to using drag & drop with the new metaobject entries list, there is a clone of the pinned app name following your cursor around as you drag it, which covers the view of the item beneath it, and the location indicator where you need to drop it.
I imagine I’m probably yelling into a void but I would be most grateful if these issues could be addressed
Hey @meandillar — on the list field: the drag order is just the array order of the metaobject GIDs stored in that field, so you can set it deterministically through the Admin GraphQL API instead. Call metaobjectUpdate (or metafieldsSet if it’s a metafield) and pass the references in the order you want, no dragging needed.
Pinned app order isn’t exposed in any public API, so that’s purely Shopify’s own UI team’s call. Both points belong in the admin feedback option and the community’s admin feedback board rather than here. Is the field type list.metaobject_reference?
At a glance 3rd party Theme and Theme Version # is lost. Confusion results multiple old themes have update available. User may update older theme instead.
Suggestion: Group Drafts by Theme. Especially if new Canvas feature has been added.
Suggestion: Make it obvious when latest version is used.
Suggestion: Make live theme info more prominent
Modals use old border-radius
@meandillar Metaobject issues are annoying but it may be worth revisiting issues raised. I’m not experiencing the app pin issue atm.
For example, in the Theme Editor, I previously had issues of “Changes saved” pill requiring a focus away or swipe to clear, but it looks to be improved now.
@cee_em thanks for the input. I’ve also noticed some very handy information for quick scanning being lost after the update - one of which I have a separate forum post for relating to the loss of visibility of compare-at price in the product page - you now need to click into the variant or the bulk editor to even see if something is on sale. Another is the product page metafields - you need to physically click on the metafield to see any description or type rather than a quick visual scan.
The pinning issue is definitely still there. It potentially depends on scroll position, number of items in the list, number of sub menu items, etc
