Sidekick gets smarter app recommendations

Hey Developers!

We’ve enhanced Sidekick to intelligently recommend apps based on merchants’ needs, provide comparison and feature highlights, and enable direct installation through conversations.

Admin is where merchants do work, and many start their app discovery journey there. Providing contextual app recommendations within their workflow is critical to their success.

Now your apps can be discovered by merchants right in their workflow, recommended through Sidekick conversations when there’s a perfect fit for their business needs. To simplify app discovery, guided search and comparisons in the App Store will soon retire.

This is just the beginning of our apps + Sidekick vision. We’re making sure great apps get found by the right merchants at the right time.

That’s a huge update. Shopify is really going for the agentic way.

Curious to know how the recommendations work. For example, if I search for “what are the best upsell apps”, is it gonna identify the keyword from the question, search that on app store and recommend the first 3 or is there anything else going on in the engine?

Thanks.

Interesting move! Questions:

  1. How can we track installs from Sidekick?
  2. Looks like it takes the first three results from search by keywords - query is real-time or with some lag?

  1. Does Sidekick uses merchant’s context? Like store size, Shopify plan, etc?

This is a great update! I am curious how we can track installs coming from Sidekick?

Is it possible to add some detail to the GA4 “shopify_app_install” event or create a new event so we can identify installs coming from this channel?

Additionally I see it is hallucinating and mentioning features which does not exists. Is there a way to report these kind of issues?

For example we don’t have AI matching feature in this app.

This is huge!

Is this realtime search from app store? ie: If I publish an app now and ask sidekick about it will it be able to fetch information?

This is awesome! Thoughts on adding the ‘App Introduction’ to the recommended app previews like how you already do in other areas when you recommend apps?

Hi @junaidkbr

The recommendations that are generated are based on the merchant’s request, and the specific merchant needs. Generated recommendations can vary based on the merchant’s business and context.

Yep! Sidekick can cater the response based on what it knows about the merchant’s shop.

It is real time. I think of it as a merchant can deploy Sidekick as an agent to go use the app store.

Now to make apps more visible to sidekick?

How to make side kick choose my app instead of my competitors?

Thanks for flagging this! We’re looking into it.
To answer your questions about reporting issues, keep posting them here. The relevant teams are all monitoring this channel for questions/feedback.

Totally understand the value of tracking install attribution from this new surface. In general we want to give more visibility into installs happening beyond the app store. We’ll share more when we can.

Thanks for the feedback - we’ll noodle on it.

Ranking well in Sidekick is very similar to ranking well in App Store. We shared these tips in the changelog:

  1. Enable Shopify-managed installation to streamline your install experience
  2. Check your App Store listing for accuracy, clarity, and structure.
  3. Achieving the Built for Shopify badge improves search ranking in both the App Store and Sidekick.

Anyone knows if there’s a way to track installs coming from Sidekick? Maybe via a GA4 event tweak or a custom event?

I am using https://rankbase.io/ to track installs coming from sidekick. For transparency I am the founder of Rankbase.
