Hello, I’ve been using GTM for a long time and this is the first time I’m encountering this issue. I’ve been setting up the GTM tag in the customer events section, following the instructions on this page (https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/pixels/custom-pixels/gtm-tutorial). However, when I use Tag Assistant or GTM’s built-in verification (install Google Tag Manager Popup) to test the connection, the code isn’t detected. Strangely, when I use the Customer Event Test Button on Shopify, it recognizes the code. I’ve tried this with two different stores and two different GTM accounts, but the results are the same.
Could you please help? Thank you.
@Joey_Azar after the update google made of their Legacy Tag Assistant - you are no longer able to see events in GMT. shopify’s inspector will only show you their events are firing but not for google = Testing Steps (#2) no longer work for "Create a Google Tag Manager custom pixel" - #7 by Dave_Strang
Thank you @zamartz for the response. Well that stinks !!!
So now we are literaly building in the Dark, we don’t have visibility over the Datalayer Data being pushed nor the tags being fired on GTM. Shopify event previewer is not that helpful since it only shows the Internal Events built by shopify no more.
Do you have any workaround?
and do you know when was that update made?
Thanks again.
@Joey_Azar on Shopify side it happened in August 24 when everyone had to move to Extensibility and moving from the checkout scripts to the sandbox web pixels. For google they swapped their legacy tag around Jan-1 to the newer version that doesn’t work. Shopify didn’t even know so I informed them last week to update the documentation so people weren’t running their head into the wall and not seeing what use to be there! LOL

@Joey_Azar - There is the ability to view GTM events that are sent via the datalayer by looking at the network activity in the developer tools. I added some instruction in this post.
