Our theme has already implemented the updated Liquid APIs and fully supports high-variant products (250+ variants). However, when a product exceeds 250 variants, Shopify still displays the warning message: “Your theme may not be compatible with products with over 250 variants.” This appears to be a false alert, as all functionality works correctly on the theme.
Reproduction steps
Create or import a product with more than 250 variants.
Open the product page in the Online Store using our theme.
The following warning message appears in the Shopify admin:
“Your theme may not be compatible with products with over 250 variants.”
even though the theme works correctly.
Additional info
Our theme has already replaced all product.variants and {{ product | json }} usage with the recommended high-variant APIs.
The variant picker is fully updated according to Shopify’s documentation.
Theme has been tested successfully with products containing 250–2048 variants.
This warning appears only in the Shopify admin, not on the storefront.
Hey @Zhang_Peng - is your app on the theme store, and if so, would you be open to sharing a link to it? I can definitely take a look to see what’s causing that notification to pop up. Hope to hear from you soon!
No need to tag individual Shopifolk. It looks like this notice is displayed to merchants to make sure they’re aware themes might need updating for this new feature. If merchants using your theme are confident this is working as your changelog describes, they can dismiss the warning and it won’t re-appear.
Hi Liam, thank you message. Actually, even with the warning message, it doesn’t affect the merchants’ ability to use the theme; they can still add more than 250 variants. However, this might cause merchants to question the quality of our theme. I’ve tested both Dawn and Horizon, and neither of them showed the warning message. I’m wondering if the issue is due to our theme not having the support tag added by the Shopify review team, which is meant to indicate that the theme supports more than 250 variants.
There is no support tag that the Shopify review team should add - it’s simply advising merchants that they should be aware this is a new feature that some themes don’t yet support.
