Not sure when this started however shopify checkout has never allowed duplicate named rates.
It’s now showing rates with exactly the same name, for example if you setup a rate called ‘Standard Shipping’ in shopify, then another rate in carrier service with the same name, previously the Shopify one would take precedence and the app one is hidden, but now both shows.
The only other time previously when this would have occurred is if a delivery customisation was used to rename rates, but now rates returned directly by carrier service is showing too.
Hi @Min_Liu, thanks for flagging this. This is an intentional market-driven shipping change, not a bug. Previously, checkout grouped rates with the same name and displayed only the cheapest one. Checkout can now display separately configured rates even when their names match, and this change is rolling out gradually.
Merchants should use distinct names and disable or remove any rates they don’t want to offer through their shipping settings or carrier app. If this is causing issues for a specific store, contact Shopify Support with the store details so we can look into.
As this change departs from previous behaviour, merchants and developers alike needs to be communicated about this before it is rolled out.
This gives everyone a chance to ensure settings still work correctly. As you can appreciate, changes like this cause significant disruptions for businesses.
I have not seen anything announced in the changelog and these stores have not migrated to market driven shipping yet.
Thanks for letting me know that the affected shops haven’t migrated to market-driven shipping yet. I’ll confirm internally whether this is expected behavior for shops that haven’t migrated and follow up here.
I agree that advance notice is important, especially when a change can affect checkout behavior. Thanks for the feedback, and I’ll make sure it’s forwarded.
Jumping in to say I really appreciate that we are departing from the old shipping profiles way of doing things. These sort of changes will be inherently bumpy.
Also appreciate you Min_Liu. The bug reports have been really helping Shopify.
Hi @Min_Liu, I’ve confirmed that this change also applies to shops that haven’t migrated to market-driven shipping. The new behavior applies by default to shops that weren’t already using same-name consolidation. Shops that were using it should not have seen any change and can continue using the previous behavior until July 2027. They’ll receive messaging in Shopify admin explaining the transition. By July 2027, these merchants will need to remove unwanted rates through the relevant settings or use a delivery customization to hide it.
Could you clarify how you came across this issue and whether the affected shops had previously relied on same-name consolidation? If they had and are now seeing duplicate options, the merchants can contact us through the Shopify Help Center so we can investigate.
Thanks, a merchant reported the issue to us. They haven’t made any changes, so the process you have described isn’t working as it has affected all stores.
We have already remediated the rates for them already so it’s not affecting them anymore.
Thanks for sharing this and for addressing it so quickly for the merchant.
Would it be okay if I sent you a DM to get the affected shop’s myshopify.com domain? We’d like to review why the shop was missed by this new logic and confirm that this change is only being applied to the expected shops.
