"Days using the app" shown in reviews is calculated incorrectly for apps without a free plan

This is a specific technical issue with how Shopify calculates the “days using the app” figure shown on App Store reviews, and I think it’s worth calling out separately because it has a direct impact on review integrity.

For apps that have no free plan, the “days using the app” counter appears to start from the date of first install - not from when the merchant activated a paid subscription. This means the number shown on a review can be wildly misleading.

A real example from my own app:

A merchant left a review showing “19 days using the app”. When I checked the actual subscription history in my Partner Dashboard, here’s what I found:

  • First installed: January 24, 2026
  • Subscription 1 activated: February 14 - duration ~3 minutes
  • Subscription 2 activated: March 6 - duration ~1 minute
  • Subscription 3 activated: March 7 - duration ~5 minutes

I hope this example is helpful and makes the issue concrete. It’s a small change that would go a long way toward making the App Store a more trustworthy place for everyone.

Thanks!!

This is a super interesting catch!

Hey @Liam-Shopify, just to add to this, slightly related: do Shopify currently block reviews from merchants who have installed an app but haven’t started a subscription yet (for apps without a free plan)? No need to let us know, but it might be something interesting to look at.
