Horizon (and what happens to dawn)?

Hey,

wondering if there will there be a github repo for horizon? also is dawn on the way out?

In the partner slack they mentioned in a comment that they currently have no plans to make Horizon open source.

However, you can find the skeleton-theme available.

legend, thanks!

Any idea whats happening with Dawn?

confirmed dawn is on the way out.

Confirmed from where? What source? Might be useful to share the information you’ve found rather than just say “confirmed”.

Sorry, I spoke with Shopify Support whom checked and advised that horizon was the replacement for Dawn.

Kind of makes sense given the amount of work to port Horizon Features to Dawn, and that Dawn is OpenSource vs Horizon which is not.

Crazy if they sunset Dawn. Have not seen anything official regarding this. However, I dont believe they would do it before Horizon (or something else?) actually supports all Shopify features. Like Combined Listings etc.

I tend to agree, seems crazy but I think dawn (given the github commits on dawn as of late and the change is logic on products) is on the way out. Its just hard to support legacy at the same time in a significant fashion.

Probably will be parked but not working on (which is the same thing)

Isn’t combined listings working on horizon? horizon shows support for combined listing in the docs?

Honestly have not tested it. Just saw another guy listing stuff not working on horizon, combined listings being part of it.

@curzey pretty sure it does, its def a little bit buggy but not overly (considering its version number).

Buggyness It could also be has they change backend to align with feature in horizon that is making it buggy.

I have done a couple of day testing it, its not terrible and feel it is probably aligned to what they are working on.

The issue with Dawn will be that to bring that to version will take probably a significantly long time from shopify’s side, and given horizon isnt opensource wouldn’t align with their strategy moving forward.

So depreciation of Dawn might be 2 years from now but feature updates I would say are over (and have been over), so it will become less as less workable (kind of like 1.0 > 2.0) to the point you have no choice.

You’re probably right then - sorry!

Chatted a bit with some Shopifolk yesterday, and even though it’s not decided yet, it doesn’t seem that they’re totally abandoning Dawn. But obviously pausing it a lot and mainly focusing on Horizon.

Pretty much as expected, I think.

(Again just uncertain “rumours”)

Everyone is pretty much saying (off the record), it is dead. github commits on that theme are very limited the last 6 months (more maintenance than anything) and they have also stated that there is no plan to migrate dawn to new logic.

There is probably adversion to actually saying it is dead, but it will naturally die out with no support and missing features.

And what’s the point of keeping Horizon “closed-sourced” and phasing out Dawn?
It doesn’t make any sense. I hope they are just waiting to bring Horizon to stable enough state and then they will create a repo.

skeleton-theme is very bare-bone and can’t function as a reference theme or a replacement for Dawn.

I don’t think there will be a horizon repo, there is no point to bring it to a state THEN release, mitigates the whole community thing (I think at least)

What do you mean by “community thing”? There’s 0 benefits of keeping it “close sourced” and a lot to gain from making it “open-source”. So I do hope they will create a repo for it.

I 100% think it should be open source, but I guess less value for them as it gets more mature (as it means less bugs/FR).

Shopify I’m sure has their reason, I think conceptually they want to push Skelton as the baseline instead of horizon for theme developers. Plus less maintanede
