Horizon GitHub repo archived: how should developers track updates?

Hi Shopify team,

Could you please clarify the plan for Horizon source updates now that the Shopify/horizon GitHub repo has been archived?

The repo previously documented using https://github.com/Shopify/horizon.git as an upstream for custom Horizon-based themes. However, the Theme Store is now on Horizon v3.5.1, while GitHub stopped at v3.4.0 and is now read-only.

This leaves developers who built custom merchant themes from Horizon unsure how to stay current.

Could Shopify confirm:

  1. Was archiving the Horizon GitHub repo intentional and permanent?
  2. Will future Horizon updates be published anywhere developers can diff or pull from?
  3. What is the recommended workflow for custom themes already built from Horizon?
  4. Should new custom theme builds still use Horizon as a base, or should developers use Skeleton instead?

Some clear guidance would really help teams who relied on the previous upstream workflow.

FYI @alxsth it looks like the repo is back up (for now), but I agree it would be good to get some formal comms from Shopify about this, including answers to all of your questions.

There is another related thread about this, see here: Horizon theme Github repository

This was a mistake.

Will future Horizon updates be published anywhere developers can diff or pull from?

Updates should be going to the repo but 3.5.0 and 3.5.1 were missed. We’ll be getting 3.5.1 in there shortly.
