Working with the new collection source system, notably the app-owned sources (shareable sources), it’s difficult to find good wordings to refer to the sources.
The term “source” is never used, so at this stage the term “source” is rather an internal / technical jargon.
So we cannot really use “source” in the messages we show to the users. For example things like “This will disconnect the source from the collection” would feel confusing for merchants who are not well-aware of this system.
So far we emphasis on the action of “disconnecting/unlinking” and use “app” instead of “source”, but it does not always read well.
It would be easier if there was a standardized wording that the merchants would understand.
The ask:
It would be ideal if Shopify helped at educating the users on a wording we can use in apps.
We don’t have a requirement around the merchant-facing wording you use in your app, so you can choose whatever best explains the action - whatever makes the most sense to you is fair!
That said, we do currently refer to these as “collection sources” and “App sources” in our merchant documentation. I definitely get the disconnect you’re pointing out, since the word “source” isn’t shown directly on those cards in Admin though.
For your example, I’d avoid “disconnect the app,” since that could sound like the entire app is being disconnected like you mentioned there. Removing a shareable source only unlinks it from that collection. Something action-based may be clearer, like:
“Stop adding products from [app name] to this collection?”
or
“Remove [source title] from this collection?”
The source itself won’t be deleted and can remain linked to other collections. Hope this helps a bit/makes sense, let me know if I can help out further.
