This is not necessarily true. Through my own digging since October 2024, much like the release of the extended variants, there is a moving goal post and adjustment of language regarding this topic. The timeline shifts with no official statement, and I have older screenshots collected with different wording and continued vague timelines.

As of version 2024-04, there are key changes to the product model that are fundamental to scaling variants beyond 100 and options beyond 3:

- I am seeing support for 2000 variants, but only 3 options on the test store in the Dev Preview. Is that expected?
Yes. The developer preview test stores are currently limited to 2K variants and 3 options. We expect to raise the option limit sometime in 2025. Please note that there will be no Admin API changes for supporting increased options, so your app should be able to benefit from increased options without any additional changes.
Thanks Matthew, during Editions I spoke with some people and seems like indeed options also going to be extended. Thanks for correction I will try to update the post.

Hi, as a plus merchant I am requesting beta access. They asked me how many variant options I need so I guess we will be allowed more. Anyone here granted beta access already and ran into any issues? What about dev stores testing this, any errors?
Hi Liam, I have now activated the feature on an expansion store but I noticed that there is still a limit of 3 variant options. My main issue was that I could not add a 4th variant option for my clothing (Condition, Colour, Size, Length). Will we be able to add more variant options soon? I tried the Combined Products app, but that app does not work properly with other apps due to the other apps not picking up the combined product and only identifying the first product clicked on.
Do Shopify Plus users hit the 100 variant limit when creating products directly from the Admin panel?
What a huge, huge disappointment it would be if they increased the variant limit to 2000+ but kept the limit of 3 option types/names. This is honestly asinine. The obvious example is golf clubs, which can have options such as Clubs, Hand, Loft, Shaft, Flex etc. This has me doing horrible things like combining all the variant option names into one, which is horrible for the customer experience. This issue is WELL DOCUMENTED over the years on these very forums. No, I am not downloading a damn 3rd party app to do this. Shopify is a $200 Billion company. FIX THIS PROBLEM.

Yay! The 2k variant limit has been officially announced by Shopify, see here! 
Like @Paul_Provan, we were also hoping that the option limit would be increased at the same time.
But, there is always hope that that update will come down the pipeline in time as it seems a logical progression now that the variant limit has been increased by over 1200%, right @Liam-Shopify?
