Hello:
Wanted to see if there is an exact date or schedule for shops to use this new functionality that will allow them to have 2000+ variants and 3+ product options.
For context, I am a developer of an application that integrates with Shopify. We don’t use any of the mutation APIs that were deprecated as part of the 2024-04 version, but we do read product and variant information from our customers. We need to know when our customers will have the option of 2000+ variants and 3+ product options so we can build our app to support them.
Is there an exact date, or even rough timeframe of when Shopify shops can do this? All I’ve seen so far on the documentation and this board is “sometime in 2025”.
Thanks for the hand
-Nino
Hi Nino,
There’s no specific date to share right now on when the extended variants feature will be fully available, but the deadline for app devs to migrate their public apps to adopt the new Products APIs is Feb 1st.
Hi Liam:
Thank you for your prompt response! A follow up question:
This documentation has details on the products API migrations that must be completed by Feb 1st:
GraphQL Admin API variants and options fields on the ProductInput on version 2024-01 or earlier
REST Admin API /products and /variants endpoints on any version
Our app doesn’t use the ProductInput
object, or the REST Admin API, so there isn’t any work for us to do for that migration. However, we read product data frequently using the GraphQL API, and the product data model will be changing to support 2000+ variants and 3+ product options.
So the relevant date for us isn’t Feb 1st, when the legacy REST API is deprecated; its whenever customers will be able to have products with 2000+ variants and 3+ options. That’s when we’ll need to make changes to support reading from the new data model in order to support this new feature.
If there’s no date set for when the extended variants feature will be fully available, where can I keep an eye out for information on when that date will be announced? Is it something that will come with a new API version? Or will it be rolled out in some other way?
Thanks again!
-Nino
So glad there will finally be more variants allowed. We have been waiting for this change to happen now for almost a year. Hope to hear a release date soon, so we can finally add more colors to our products.
Hey folks,
Just to provide more info on timelines for the roll out of increased variants: in early February merchants on a Shopify Plus plan or above will start to be able to opt-in to early access to 2,048 (aka 2K) variants.
More info on that here: New GraphQL product APIs and early access to 2048 (aka 2K) variants
Hi Liam,
Just looking for a little clarification to your last reply “Shopify Plus plan or above” (are to get this feature). I assume this is a typo for two reasons; one-there is no paid plan above plus, and two there have been numerous announcements stating this would be for all users. Can you elaborate or clarify which plans will have access to the increased variant limit in Feb? Much appreciated!
@Liam-Shopify is there any update on this timing? One of our Plus clients just checked their Test Drive and still doesn’t see it. Thank you.
No update to share right now @derrick - this will be a gradual roll-out to merchants on Plus over the coming weeks.
@Liam-Shopify When will this be available for all Shopify users?
No exact date to share on when this will be available for all.
It’s now the beginning of April. Have they updated the timeline for general release?
Hi Tom,
I don’t have a timeline to share on when this will be available to all. The migration deadline for apps using the deprecated REST product API has just passed and the team working on this feature are in a testing phase before releasing access.
Thanks for the update Liam. I created a Dev store yesterday to play with the extended variants (got up to 2028) and noticed that the options were still limited to three. I thought those were being extended as well? The three option limit has always been a massive pain to deal with and the number one reason clients ask me about switching platforms.

@Tom_Tubbiola @Liam-Shopify any news on this? Increased variant options is almost as important as increased variants, especially for fashion brands.
Hi @Kia_Jadwat - is your store a Plus store?
@Liam-Shopify Just checking in — we’re already past mid-year. Any news on when the increased variants feature will be rolled out to production (GA)?
Hi @teesopia - the feature is currently available to all Plus merchants. Plus merchants can activate the 2048 variant limit via test drive.
Hey @Nino_Lambert,
As of now, Shopify has not provided exact date for the general availability of the new 2000+ variants and 3+ product options functionality.
Talk about a massive Bait and Switch. They announced it TWO YEARS AGO with great fanfare and then can’t get it done. The engineering management needs to be replaced.
I read that this was supposed to roll out at the beginning of 2025, but when I reached out to Shopify, they weren’t able to give me any answers. I currently sell on both Etsy and Shopify. Etsy allows over 100 variants, which makes it easier for customers to see all the color options I offer. Unfortunately, this has made it challenging to get customers to shop on my Shopify site, since they know they’ll find more choices on Etsy.
