In September, Shopify sent an email announcing the planned rollout of the increase to the variant limit to 2048 for âEarly Octoberâ. Since it was pushed multiple times, my hopes were not very high for it to actually release this time around (Questions about 2,000 Variants + Store Resource Limits - maxProductVariants still limited to 100?).
Checking in with other Partners, it appears, the rollout has started or maybe even already completed!
The stores of clients I checked have access to it now as well.
Finally, native bundles are more powerful and 3 products with 12 colour ways each can be combined
Though I was surprised, that I couldnât find any official announcements nor anything in the changelog:
The only thing that came up was a small Twitter thread: https://x.com/kirplatonov/status/1974087318383587823
I assumed Shopify would make a much bigger deal out of this.

Yup itâs out, the shoppy .dev changeog thread .
I also made a thread on the merchant forums too for partners and devs to highlight any insights for merchants.
2k variants now generally available to all merchants - Shopify Community

I have just seen the introduction of the new 2048 variant limit with the new product model. Since the â24 Winter Edition I have been excited about the announcement.
My main concern is that I always thought this will also mean the introduction of more variant options, which is the biggest issue I always had with the old product model. There was also an image in the â24 Winter Edition that showed 4 options on a product page. Has extending this limit been scrapped? Will this limit ever be increased?
I would love to hear an explanation on this matter.

Yes, thatâs great news! I was wondering, @KyleG-Shopify, is there any plan to also increase the limit on the number of variant options because of this?

Hey @lynthius, it is something Iâve seen frequently asked for. Currently I donât have a timeline on if or when this would roll out.
Iâd believe even if the limit is raised it might only be like ~4 for non-Plus plans, with higher limit for Plus plans.
As it was a ton of engeering time it seems.
But maybe that gating would in turn mean combined listings would go into general availability too /shrug.
