NFC VAS / Smart Tap Support on Shopify POS Terminals

Hi Shopify Team,

We are evaluating Shopify POS hardware and would like clarification regarding NFC capabilities on Shopify-approved payment terminals.

Specifically:

  1. Do Shopify POS terminals support NFC Value Added Services (VAS), such as:

    • Apple Wallet VAS (loyalty / pass tap before payment)

    • Google Smart Tap (wallet-based loyalty identification)?

  2. If the terminals support NFC for Apple Pay / Google Pay, do they also support the separate VAS / Smart Tap AIDs required for loyalty identification?

  3. If VAS is not currently enabled:

    • Is this a firmware capability that can be enabled?

    • Is it restricted by region (e.g., UK vs US)?

    • Is there a partner pathway to enable it?

Our use case is enabling wallet-based loyalty identification via NFC prior to, or alongside, payment on Shopify POS hardware.

We are not attempting to replace Shopify Payments — only to understand whether the hardware supports NFC VAS in addition to contactless EMV payments.

Any technical documentation or guidance would be appreciated.
